Early Gibson driving mashie
Maker: William Gibson , Kinghorn
Date: 1899

This is a club with William Gibson’s earliest small star mark, from his time on his own in Edinbugh in 1899, before he moved to Kinghorn with which he is most associated. The reverse of the smooth-faced iron is also stamped “W Gibson Edinbugh” in oval form.

The form of the club is relatively unusual, a driving mashie, a club for which Willie Park was best known, and a sturdy one at that, with a 3.5” x 1-75” face and a 3.5” hosel.

As with all of Gibson’s clubs it has a quality shaft, the ring hickory (from close to the centre of the tree with the characteristic ring pattern remaining perfectly straight. The grip is a replacement from the 1920s. It may be coincidence but I like to think it is a display of brand loyalty 30 years on from the purchase of the club as it is one of the Gibson company’s patented burgundy, polished calfskin “Tacki” grips with this information picked out in gold on the leather.
