Patent Park scareneck compressed spoon
Maker:
William Park and Son
, Musselburgh Date: 1894
The inventive Willie Park patented a design for compressed wooden heads in 1892 in which the head was steamed so that the neck could be bent upwards. He tried this with holly, which had a tendency to crack, and, as here, with hickory.
This is as fine an example of the club type I have seen, in immaculate condition and the grain running straight up the neck.
The head is stamped “Wm Park Compressed Patent” and has a gutta percha insert secured with cobbler’s pins to absorb the force of impact with a gutta ball. These were often repairs but in this case I think it formed part of the original club.
There is a solid lead backweight and the sole is protected with a solid brass soleplate secured by six screws.
A straight hickory shaft bears the original sheepskin grip with woollen underlisting visible in parts.
This is a great collectors’ club.
