Exotic scareneck driver
Maker:
John S Pearson
, London/Ocala/Richmond NY Date: 1898
This is a beautiful club but I wish I knew exactly what I have here.
Exotic. because of the wood used, the shaft is greenheart and is stamped "J S Pearson West Middlesex GC" in a circular form. The head, which I believe is made from holly, though I cannot be certain, is stamped "WELLIS". There was a Walter Ellis who was professional at Ventnor before going to Colombo in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) but the stamp has no space or dot between the "W" and "E" which makes me think it is an owner's name so I have attributed the club to Pearson. The slip is attached to the sole by three screws rather than hickory dowels.
Only the bottom portion of the solid leather grip remains and is whipped to keep it in place but the full woollen underlisting is in place,
A very well-made club with a wonderful mellow finish to both head and shaft.
Price $420.00 Reference: D340
