Long-nose putter
Maker: John Jackson , Perth
Date: 1850

A mid-nineteenth century longnose putter from one of the truly great clubmakers, John Jackson of Perth.

The slender dark-stained head is stamped "Jackson" (more clearly than the photograph suggests). It has a ram's horn slip secured by three hickory dowels.

The shaft, and so probably the sheepskin grip also, is a later replacement stamped for Robert Forgan, St Andrews.

This club was previously in the collection of Robert Hansen, founder of the Thistle and Dormie Golf Clubs in North Carolina and then the late Jaime Ortiz-Patino who brought the Ryder Cup to continental Europe at Valderrama. As you will see from the sticker on the shaft one of them, or their adviser, has dated it to 1830. I have been a little more conservative and gone for 1850. The tag tied to the grip is from when it was sold at Sotheby’s.

Price $8700.00
