Condie smooth-faced putter for Auchterlonie
Maker: D & W Auchterlonie , St Andrews/North Berwick
Date: 1909

Of course Auchterlonie is a name always associated with St Andrews but the popularity of North Berwick as a golf venue was not wasted on the family. This popularity is illustrated by the professional tournament organised there in 1909 with a 125 pound first prize, won by George Duncan, one of seven current or future Open champions in the field, the largest professional purse awarded at that time. Huge crowds watched with, reportedly, more than a thousand following Harry Vardon alone to the first tee.

David and Willie Auchterlonie (another Open champion) opened a summer business in North Berwick in 1907 with David making clubs and Willie offering lessons. These Auchterlonie clubs with the North Berwick stamp are relatively rare (there is a similar putter to this one in the British Golf Museum) because their stay here was short with the workshop being sold to local clubmaker Alex Marshall in 1911.

In addition to the Auchterlonie stamp, this smooth-faced putter has the rose mark of Robert Condie, who forged the head, the "Accurate Arrow" and "Special".

An eminently playable club with a lot of history, it has a straight hickory shaft with original leather grip.
