Maxwell putting cleek
Maker:
St Andrew Golf Company
, Glasgow / Dunfermline Date: 1921
The Maxwell patent of 1910, with the holes drilled in the hosel, was applied to all iron clubs but putters are relatively unusual, perhaps not least by virtue of the fact that even if the holes doe have an effect, there is very little friction or wind resistace in the downstroke of a putter. This one, with the ten hole hosel pattern, was made by The St Andrew Golf Company and also exhibits the heavily flanged sole associated with the Maxwell design.
The clubhead with a rich patina has an enclosed hyphen face and is stamped on the reverse "The St Andrew Golf Co Ltd" , " Warranted Hand Forged Maxwell Model Putting Cleek" and "Standard".
The hickory shaft is straight and in good condition and carries heavy woollen listing and a replacement sheepskin grip.
