Smith's patent anti-shank iron
Maker:
Ben Sayers
, North Berwick Date: 1910
Like the Fairlie model, Smith's patent was another attempt to minimise the problem of shanking, striking the ball with the heavy hosel of early irons. G F Smith's design, patented in 1894, involved a sharply offset hosel (as can be seen in the inset photograph). The true Smith's model, as this one is, has extra weighting in the toe (later implementations sometimes skipped this).
Like most of the Smith anti-shank clubs, the head was forged by William Gibson at Kinghorn and the Gibson star is stamped on the reverse of the head. The club was finished by Ben Sayers and his name, plus "North Berwick" is stamped in a double oval. Other stampings are "Special", "Warranted Hand Forged", "Smith's Model" and "Medium Iron".
The face has a hyphen pattern enclosed between decorative bars,
The hickory shaft is straight and in good condition with original sheepskin grip and woollen listing beneath.
