Early Gibson ladies' iron for William McEwan
Maker:
William McEwan
, Formby Date: 1903
One of the earliest William Gibson heads, recognisable by the very small version of the five-pointed star cleekmark, produced for the scion of the famous Musselburgh clubmaking family, William McEwan, during his early days as professional at Formby.
The face of the club has an enclosed dot-diamond pattern and the reverse has the aforementioned star, an "L" for ladies, and "D McEwan Special Formby" in oval form.
The straight hickory shaft is stamped "H W N", presumably the initials of a former owner, and bears a polished calfskin burgundy grip, probably a replacement added in the 1920s.
