Left-handed lofting iron
Maker:
Charles Brand
, Carnoustie Date: 1895
A real old warhorse of a club with a very heavy head, smooth-faced and stamped on the reverse "C Brand Carnoustie" within a double oval. The stout hickory shaft is still perfectly straight and has a band of old twine whipping just above the hosel. Whether this is an old shaft repair or to reduce the whippiness of the shaft is not clear: it is old, in keeping with the character of the club so has been left without inspecting what is below. A large "ding" halfway down the hosel has also had no effect on the playability of the club which has clearly been built to last.
The thick black leather grip, and the whipping with it, may well be original and set the club off very nicely. Sturdy enough for left-handed pre-1900 hickory play or a good club of the period for the display case.
