Ladies' "boat-shaped" mashie
Maker: Thomson & Cowan , Glasgow
Date: 1926

A ladies' club from the mid-1920s with correspondingly smaller head in a light rustless alloy and thinner and shorter shaft. The face has an enclosed dot-dash pattern and the reverse is stamped "3 Mashie L". "Made in Scotland", "Rustless" and "Special". The "3" and the name "Mashie" shows the club is from the transition time between named irons and numbered irons and this would vary from company to company. The mashie was equivalent to the modern 5 iron and many manufacturers stamped it "5" but the house choice here was "3".

In the middle of the back of the head is "Thomson & Cowan Glasgow" in oval form. We have no record of this firm as clubmakers. They may have been wholesalers or they may have been sports retailers. The "boat shape" of the head is similar to that used by Donaldson & Co of Glasgow in their "Speug" and "Birdie" irons so the club may have been made by them or it is a copy of one of their models.

The straight, light shaft would make the club very suitable for a lady wishing to use it in hickory competitions and it is topped with the original soft black leather grip, also in excellent condition.
