Hand-marked Anderson mashie
Maker:
James Anderson
, Anstruther Date: 1894
A nice mashie from the famous Anstruther forge of James Anderson with something added over the succeeding decades. The club would have been made as a smooth-faced iron in the last decade of the 19th century, before the death of James Anderson, as it has the traces of his .5" circular cleekmark on the reverse of the head. A deep, and hand-marked, dot-diamond face pattern has been added later, probably around 1905 when this design was popular.
The hickory shaft is of good quality, well-preserved and perfectly straight. The grip, in near perfect condition, is of polished burgundy calfskin, probably added to the club in the late1920s and with the decorative whipping typical of that period. Eminently playable, the deeply marked face also makes for a good display item.
