Crowley mashie
Maker: J S Crowley , Earlsferry/Glasgow
Date: 1912

A good mashie, representative of its time, just before the First World War and from a well-respected Glasgow clubmaker. The face has a simple enclosed ray pattern and the reverse, with very clear stampings, has "J Crowley Maker Glasgow" within an oval, "Warranted hand Forged" and "Special". It is also marked with an arrow which is probably the cleekmark of Anderson of Anstruther although, by this time, they were being used by many cleekmakers. The fact that there is no "Accurate" below it suggests it is Anderson's mark.

The dark stained hickory shaft is straight and in very good condition. The red polished calfskin grip is a replacement from the 1920s and is a very good example of one of the trademarked "tacki" grips of that time, stamped "The Fulford Grip Registered", this having been invented by Harry Fulford, professional in Yorkshire and at the French resort of Le Touquet.
