Condie sabbath stick for Brand
Maker:
Charles Brand
, Carnoustie Date: 1893
A smoothface iron head forged by the great St Andrews cleekmaker, Robert Condie, for Charles Brand of Carnoustie. The reverse bears Condie's earliest single fern cleekmark surrounded by "C Brand Carnoustie". The fern is deep and clear, Brand's information somewhat faded due to many years of hands grasping the head as a handle. Irons with the fern mark are fairly rare; sabbath clubs even more so, this being the first I've seen of this age from Brand who turned out a lot of them in the first decade of the twentieth century.
The club is 34.5" long with a 3" hosel and dark-stained hickory shaft. It is tipped with a brass ferrule.
