Ladies' Mashie Niblick
Maker:
William Brown
, Portpatrick/Kyles of Bute Date: 1908
A ladies' mashie niblick marked for William Brown, pro at the Kyles of Bute club between 1906 and 1909. It would be nice to say 'one careful lady owner' but a little wide of the mark. There are a series of 'dings' along the bottom of the blade and even the hosel has a hairline crack in it although, being in the middle on the side, it has no effect either on playability or the attractiveness of the club as a display item. The face has a hyphen ray pattern enclosed within decorative bars. The reverse of the head is clearly stamped "L", "Mashie Niblick", "Warranted Hand Forged" and "Wm Brown Special" in an oval. The shaft is hickory, straight and solid. The thick tan leather grip is not original
