Turnberry Mashie Niblick for Fernie
Maker:
Leyland
, Birmingham/Glasgow Date: 1923
A mashie niblick, made by the Leyland company (the reverse of the clubhead is stamped with Leyland's bear mark) for one of the scions of the famous Fernie clan of professionals and clubmakers. This one is for Tom Fernie during his spell at the hotel and Open Championship venue of Turnberry in Ayrshire. The club is clearly stamped with "Tom Fernie Turnberry" in signature. The face has an enclosed line pattern.
The shaft is of highly prized ring hickory and, as one would expect, is still as straight as the day it was made. The burgundy calfskin grip is a period replacement.
