J H Taylor ladies mid iron
Maker:
Cann and Taylor
, Sheen / US Date: 1898
A lady's club is not just a cut down version of a man's, at least not if it is a good one. This J H Taylor autograph iron is an excellent example of that point. The shaft, which has a rich mahogany stain, is shorter, of course, but it is also thinner. The head, too, is smaller but keeps balance by having a thinner hosel. Even the whipping, which is original. at either end of the smooth black leather grip is thinner than on the equivalent man's club. The end result is a well proportioned club which is perfectly balanced for a lady to use and pleasing to the eye.
The head is smooth-faced and, on the reverse bears the signature of one of the greatest golfers ever, J H Taylor. Above this is stamped "Cann and Taylor Warranted Hand Forged", the firm he founded with noted clubmaker George Cann. It is also stamped "L" and "Mid-Iron". We now take product endorsement by golf professionals for granted but the use of Taylor's signature, back in 1898, was an innovation. He eventually adopted it as a trademark in 1908.
