Antique Golf Clubs from Scotland

A H Findlay smooth-faced mashie
Maker: Wright and Ditson , Boston
Date: 1900

The full story of Alexander (A H) Findlay is in the Makers section but, suffice to say, he was one of the most interesting characters in American golf.

One of Montrose's most famous golfing sons, his work in laying out US courses did much to reintroduce the game at the end of the 19th century. There were courses, at Savannah and Charleston, for instance, played over by British Troops and emigres post revolution but the game then died a death in the US. Popular accounts suggest the re-introduction of golf came about with John Reid playing at Yonkers in 1888 which later became the St Andrew's Club. Some material, however, suggests A H Findlay laid out a six hole course in Nebraska in 1885 which would put a whole new slant on the history. In any event, Wright & Ditson coaxed him out of retirement in 1899 to give his name to a "set" of their clubs. This is the smoothface mashie from that range.

A very well-made club, far distant from the mass-produced items the company later turned out, it has a very solid and heavy ring hickory shaft with original thick smooth leather grip with underlisting. The reverse of the clubhead is marked "A H Findlay" with "Wright and Ditson" (in curved form), and "Makers 5" below.
