Open Championship 1909: Deal
J H Taylor finally won his fourth Open, drawing level with Braid and Vardon, fifteen years after his first triumph at Sandwich and nine years since his last victory. A model of consistency, with three rounds of 74 and one of 73, according to reports of the time he had a somewhat indifferent first round but a 73 in the second round (on the afternoon of the first day, no one round a day for these chaps) gave him the lead. On the second day, James Braid, who had been rather out of sorts, returned to using his aluminium putter had something of a charge but a couple of long range lipped putts, and an overhit one at the last, gave him a 73 which was not close enough to challenge on the Friday afternoon. Taylor held a lead of four shots from Tom Ball and six from Braid and Johns and played a near perfect round. For his triumph he received the gold medal and £50. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
