Open Championship 1908: Prestwick
This was, by far, the most emphatic of James Braid's five Open wins. He opened with a 70 which was a new championship record which lasted all of fifty minutes before Ernest Gray turned in a 68. Sandy Herd had a 74 and thought he was doing well, 'I'm playing gowf", he said, 'not mad stuff like yon fellow who did 68". The other two thirds of the triumvirate were well out of things after two rounds and Braid had 14 shots over Taylor and 15 over Vardon at this point. Braid had a 72 in his second round including a shot at the eighth where he solved the problem of lodging his ball in a whin bush 'by apparently taking the whole bush along with the ball on to the green'. Braid's third round of 77 included an 8 at the Cardinal but he still had six shots to spare for the final round. He shot 72 in the final round playing near perfect golf. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
