Open Championship 1906: Muirfield
The final result looks as straightforward as one might have expected at that time, the great triumvirate occupying the top three places but each of them started with a 77, six shots behind Jack Graham. J H Taylor was the first of the three to recover with 72 in the second round coming back in an almost unbelievable 31 given he took five on the eighteenth. By the end of the third round Taylor was a shot ahead of Rowland Jones and three in front of Vardon and Braid. In those days a draw was made for the order of play for each day and had nothing to do with creating an exciting finish for television! Taylor was one of the first out in the last round and took 80 strokes, Vardon and Duncan fared no better. James Braid started after all his major competitors were done requiring a 76 to win. Out in 38 he was on target but sailed home with eight pars and a birdie to win by three strokes. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
