The last Open Championship to be won with the gutta percha ball and James Braid's first victory.

Vardon led after the first round with a 77, two ahead of Braid and Taylor and he stretched this lead to four during the second round. Braid pulled him back: his long driving resulting in a 3 at the long 5th which other players could not reach in two and, at the end of the round they were level.

Braid's third round was what made the difference. He went round in 74, matched by J H Taylor to Vardon's 79. Huge crowds had come by train to watch this second day's play and Braid played conservatively in the final round for an 80. Disaster nearly struck on his approach to the final green, ' I broke my cleek. I came down hard on a little piece of turf sticking up behind the ball, and away went the head of the club and a piece of the shaft with it .... Thank goodness I got my shot in just the same, and the ball ran up nicely on the green'. It was enough. Vardon, needing three fours on the closing holes to tie, put his drive into a bunker at 16 and took 6.
