Open Championship 1895: St Andrews
The Edinburgh Evening News described it at the time as ‘one of the most remarkable championships in the history of the game of golf’ and felt that Taylor ‘accomplished a feat worthy of any of the much vaunted old masters of the game’. Taylor had a poor first found, of 86, and Sandy Herd took the lead after the second round, kept it in the third and so led Taylor by three going into the final round. Remember in these days the draw was the draw, the leaders were not paired together as the last couple and Herd may have been hampered by playing in the worst of the wind and the rain. The press accounts suggested Herd played conservatively, trying not to drop shots whereas Taylor went on the attack ‘with the result that Herd was short on the green almost every hole’ whereas ‘Taylor gave every putt a chance’. Taylor’s final round of 78 against Herd’s 85 meant a win by four strokes for Taylor and his second successive Open triumph. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
