Open Championship 1874: Musselburgh
1874 was the first year the Championship had been played over the Musselburgh links and it was won by a local man. Mungo Park was Willie Park’s brother and had learned his golf in the town. However, he had been a seaman for twenty years and not played the game. Returning to Musselburgh shortly before the tournament he found the skills had not deserted him. Young Tom Morris finished second and it was to be his last Open. There is a further connection between the winner and the runner-up. The next year the Morrises were in North Berwick to play Willie and Mungo Park. It was after this match Young Tom received the news his wife had died. Heartbroken, he died that same year on Christmas Day aged 24. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
