![]() Clubmakers Arthur Gray South Africa/Colchester Born in Climping, Sussex in 1879, Arthur George Gray was one of six brothers who were all professional golfers. He was professional at the Surbiton club in 1899 from where he entered Open qualifying without success. He moved to the Gravesend club in 1902 or 1903 and qualified in the latter year for the final stages of the News of the World, losing there to J H Taylor. At the end of the year he emigrated to South Africa to become professional at Port Elizabeth. He entered the South African Open the following year and was runner-up. He won it in 1905 and 1906 and was second again in 1910. After the 1910 competition he returned to England and entered the Open Championship from his home club of Littlehampton. The following year he was appointed professional at Colchester. He enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) and was wounded during the Somme offensive and died as a result on 18 November 1916, He is buried in the British cemetery at Contay.
