Clubmakers Sandy Donaldson Monifieth Prior to the Monifieth links coming into public ownership in 1899, the course had been run by the Panmure club on behalf of the Dalhousie Estate. They employed Sandy Donaldson as greenkeeper from at least 1894. There was a hiatus in 1899 when the Panmure lease ended, and before the links were bought to save them from housing development, and provision was made for Sandy to carry on with urgent work such as sanding the greens. The new links committee kept him on and a newspaper report in March 1899 proclaimed he had the course at ‘full medal stretch and in fine condition’ and noted that ‘already some very considerable improvements are noticeable under the new management’. In July 1900 it was announced he had been accidentally killed on the railway. ‘Although his defective hearing debarred sustained conversation’, and one surmises may have played a part in his death, ‘he was always ready with an encouraging word or a kindly remark’. I do not know if he made clubs: certainly I have seen none bearing his name. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
