Clubmakers James R B Gourlay Carnoustie/Montreal Son of the famous Carnoustie cleekmaker, also James, he worked in the Carnoustie forge after his father’s death in 1908. James R B Gourlay, one time Scottish YMCA champion, emigrated to Canada in 1925 to become professional at the Islesmere Club in Montréal. He had another Carnoustie clubmaker, George Bisset, as one of his assistants. He went south to the United States in 1927 to take up the professional’s position at Glencoe, Illinois, where he remained into the 1930s, spending his winters as a professional at the Rapides Country Club in Alexandria, Louisiana.
