A G Tait
Ranfurly
A G Tait Alexander Grieve Tait, who served a clubmaking apprenticeship with William Gibson, was a fine amateur player in the Kinghorn Thistle club and a winner of the town’s links championhip. He was called up by the Forth Royal Garrison Artillery at the start of the First World War during which he served in France. He was severely wounded and was awarded the Military Medal.

In April 1919, fully recovered, he accepted the post of professional at the Ranfurly Castle club in Renfrewshire. In 1921 he joined his brother, William as professional at the Automobile Club of Detroit (now the Pine Lake Country Club). In turn, he was replaced by Ranfurly by his brother-in-law James Neilson.

He met Irénée du Pont snr in Detroit who asked him to come to Delaware as head professional at the Wilmington Country Club which he did in 1923. He remained in this position until 1962 when he took charge of the club’s Concord Course for a year before retiring in 1923.

Tait also had a long association with the Everglades club in Florida where he served as head professional in the winter months from 1922 onwards. During his time here he won the Palm Beach professional tournament in 1934.

Alex Tait died at his home in Wilmington on 20 December 1978.
