Clubmakers Peter McEwan Musselburgh/Formby One of several Peter McEwans in this golfing dynasty, he was born in Edinburgh on 3 January 1834, the son of Douglas and his wife Maria, née Allan. He was 13 when his father moved the family and the clubmaking firm to Musselburgh. Peter was the “& Son” in the “D McEwan & son” name. He was the first of several McEwans to serve as professional at Formby having organised a deal to provide the club with golf clubs and balls and going there himself in 1892, followed by his youngest son, David the following year. In 1895 the two of them traveled from there to Portrush in 1895 for a tournament. On arrival at the clubhouse in Portrush on 10 September Peter fell down dead. The Manchester Courier commended his clubmaking saying ‘his driver and brassie heads were a picture for neatness and finish while the excellence of the material used was always of the best’. Captain McCalmont MP, at the inquest called him, ‘a most upright and honourable citizen’. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
