Clubmakers Robert Walker Southerndown/Cardiff etc Born in Aberdeen in 1885, but spending most of his career in Wales, Robert Walker learned his trade as an apprentice with Robert Forgan in St Andrews and, after a spell on the staff at Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society, he became assistant toGeorge Duncan at Timperley. He took up the position of professional at Southerndown in 1906, setting a course record during his stay and finishing second in the Welsh Championship of 1912. The following year he succeeded Arthur Day at Scarborough. He served during the war, first with the Yorkshire Regiment and then witth the Field Service (Royal Engineers). After demob he became professional at Southerndown again in 1919. In 1921 he became the first professional at Cardiff and designed the course himself with it opening the following year. He remained in post here until 1928 at which time he moved to the Glamorganshire club where he finished his career. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
