Percy Alliss
Wanstead/Berlin/Ferndown
Percy Alliss Percy Alliss was born in Sheffield in 1897 and began his professional career at the Clyne club in Swansea and won the Welsh Professional Tournament in 1920.

He took up the professional’s position at Wanstead in England in 1924 before moving to the newly formed Wannsee club in Berlin in 1926. A spell at Beaconsfield was followed by him accepting the post (following ratification by the Parks and Allotments Committee of Leeds Council!) at Temple Newsam in 1936.

He resigned from Leeds in September 1938 citing lack of support from the members giving him little time to practice. His wife was more outspoken, ‘I want Percy to get away from Leeds as soon as possible … It was a mistake for him to come here and the sooner he gets another post, preferably in the South, the better’.

That post was at Ferndown, in Dorset, where he was appointed professional in December 1938, taking up the post early in 1939 and remaining there until his retirement at the age of 70 in 1967.

He is now mostly recognised as rhe father of Peter Alliss which, given Alliss fils’ status hovering between an antique and a national treasure, may be fair enough but ignores Percy’s tremendous professional record. He played four times in the Ryder Cup and, when Peter also played they became the first father and son to compete. He had five top 5 finishes in the Open Championship between 1928 and 1936, triumphed in the first Scottish Open at Gleneagles in 1935 and won the News of the World and the Penfold Tournament twice. Overseas he was German Open Champion five times and won the Italian Open in 1927. He tied with Walter Hagen in the Canadian Open of 1931 losing the 36 hole play-off by one hole.

He died in Bournemouth in 1975.
