Charles L Millar
Glasgow
Charles L Millar Firm established in 1895. He was also proprietor of the Thistle Golf Company and the Glasgow Golf Company.

A court case in which he was involved in 1898 illustrates the variable quality of gutta percha used in early golf-ball making. The Bellvale Chemical Company of Glasgow was suing him for the price of a quantity of golf balls; he was counter-suing for £1500 for alleged breach of contract. Expert witnesses were present in the form of Tom Morris, Robert Simpson of Carnoustie and Bob Munro, once of Carnoustie, but then professional at Richmond. Old Tom explained, “I gave an ‘XL’ ball to one of the scratch men …. With a mighty swipe this golfer drove the ball from the first tree, but none of the bystanders saw the sphere reach the ground. After a long and careful search the bits of gutta which had formed the ball were found over a considerable area of ground’.
