Clubmakers Alexander Neilson Edinburgh Alexander Neilson was born in Edinburgh in 1752, son of another clubmaker, Robert Neilson (1719-1767). An advertisement for a property sale in the Caledonian Mercury of 19 January 1782 identifies his home as being at the foot of Leith Walk, fronting the Coach-road to Edinburgh by the Canongate. An earlier entry for him, in Williamson's Directory for 1768., shows him as a golfclub maker at 'head of Kirkgate' which tallies as this is also at the foot of Leith Walk (much of it demolished in the 1960s). There is an iron putter (extremely rare for the 18th century) with a 7” hosel bearing his name in the World Golf Museum in Pinehurst. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
