Clubmakers James Foulis St Andrews/Chicago James Foulis (1870 - 1928) was the son of a foreman at Tom Morris's but learned his trade as a clubmaker at Robert Forgan’s. In 1895 he emigrated to the United States to become professional at Chicago Golf Club, the country's first 18 hole course. He took part in the first US Open in 1895 finishing third and won it the following year at Shinnecock Hills. With his brother, David, developed and patented the mashie niblick in 1904.
