Clubmakers C H Reith London/Yelverton/Winnipeg Charlie Reith was the son of W R Reith professional at Eltham and began his professional career at the nearby Eltham Warren club. From here he qualified for the Open Championship in 1920 and 1921, years when everyone had to qualify, and the Glasgow Herald 1000 Guineas competition prior to the 1921 Open. He was announced as the new professional at Yelverton in Devon in May 1922 from where he won the West of England Championship in 1923, no mean feat considering the calibre of competitors, the Whitcome Brothers, Arthur Havers and George Duncan He was appointed professional to the North Middlesex club in April 1925 but in 1928 emigrated. He came to Winnipeg where his father was but was en route to the United States. However, he accepted the offer of the professional's post at the short-lived Winnipeg club at Bird's Hill, which went bankrupt in 1931. He quickly found another position at Elmhurst before becoming professional at Assinboine. His son, Bobby, was an outstanding amateur, junior provincial champion at 15, 5 provincial amateur titles and four Manitoba Opens. He went to Windsor, Ontario, as professional to the Essex Golf and Country Club in 1938 and followed his father as professional at Assinboine in 1950. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
