Clubmakers Charles Johns Ashford/Purley Charles Johns was born in the naval dockyard town of Devonport in 1887. He began his professional career at the Southdown club in Shoreham in 1908 and moved to Ashford Manor a couple of years later. He took up the post of professional at Purley Downs around the start of the First World War and, after active service in the war, returned here, serving the club until 1947. He was a good clubmaker and seemed to have a penchant for specialty wooden clubs: wooden cleeks, bulldog spoons, 'trouble woods', baffies and the like.
