Clubmakers Alex "Sandy" Herd St Andrews Alex "Sandy" Herd was born in St Andrews in 1868. Open Champion in 1902, he was also runner-up in 1892, 1895, 1910 and 1920. He was a pro at Royal Portrush, Huddersfield, Coombe Hill and Moor Park. Died in 1944. He would undoubtedly have won many more Open Championships had it not been for the fact his era coincided with the reign of the 'great triumvirate', Taylor, Vardon, Braid. He was often considered a fourth member of this group and, indeed, played a series of Scotland v England challenge matches, with James Braid as his partner, against Vardon and Taylor. The photograph is from 1893. Still playing tournaments in his late 60s, his characteristic style was the old style palm-grip and his "waggle" at address. Bernard Darwin wrote, 'The number of his waggles is only exceeded by that of his friends.' Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
