Clubmakers Worthington Golf Inc Elyria, Ohio Producing golf clubs since 1894, George Cushing Worthington founded the Worthington Ball Co in 1904 and produced his friend, Dr Coburn Haskell’s, rubber-cored ball under licence. The first white covered ball was made here, the first Balata-covered ball and the first coloured golf ball. In one of the history articles on this site, I gently mocked the 1950s Eisenhower-inspired enthusiasm for all things “nuclear” when a golf ball with a radium core was marketed. Of course, as with all golfing inventions I should have looked a long way back: in 1910 Worthington produced the “Radio” golf ball having a centre with raw rubber compounded with radium particles. “I Like Ike” was predated by “J’aime Mme Curie”. The advertisement is from 1913. Later they used Tommy Armour, the “Silver Scot”, and Billy Burke in many of their advertisements. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
