Clubmakers Charles Hunter Prestwick / Blackheath Born Prestwick 1837. Professional there 1864-1866 and played in the first Open Championship, before moving south to be professional at Royal Blackheath until 1868. Returned to Prestwick and served there as professional and, later, starter, until his death in January 1921. If some of the articles here are a little sniffy about the relationship between the members and the ‘hired hand but don’t step into the clubhouse’ professional, that’s quite intentional: it was generally the way until Walter Hagen came along. The generosity towards Charles Crawford Hunter is an impressive counterweight.
