George W Fernie
Troon
George William Fernie was the son of Willie Fernie’s younger brother George, who frequently played in foursome matches with his brother, and Flora Struthers Richardson. He was born in Troon on 2 November 1891.

A clubmaker, he enlisted in August 1915, after his mother died and eight days before the death of his father, in the RNVR. He was assigned to the Howe Battalion, with the rank of Able Seaman.

He was posted to Stavros, Greece, in February of 1916 where he served until the late summer, when on 11 August 1916 he was severely injured by a grenade explosion that wounded him in the back, right arm and face. He was invalided to the UK via Marseilles on 20 August 1916.

Two months later, on 16 November 1916, "He died suddenly at 1:15 pm in Military Hospital Bagthorpe, Nottingham, from grenade wound of the right hand, collapse following administration of anaesthetic."

George Fernie is buried in Troon Cemetery.

My thanks for this information to Don Childs and for his disambiguation of this George from his cousin.
