Tom Lewis
Birmingham
Thomas H Lewis was one of seven brothers who became golf professionals. He was born in Great Malvern in 1875 or 1876. His golfing education came, as it did for several of the brothers, at the hands of his elder brother William to whom he was assistant at King’s Norton. The 1901 census shows him, a golf club maker, living with William, his wife Jane and daughter Francis in Wychall Lane.

In 1905 he became the professional at the Moseley club where his brother Alfred had been pro before. Off he went to play in the Open Championship at St Andrews. A second round 94 ensured that he missed the cut, a similar fate befalling brother William.

He remained at Moseley until March 1913 when he accepted the post of professional at the 9-hole course at Headley Heath beside Lifford station in Birmingham which had opened the previous year. The Headley Heath club did not survive the war years and so 1919 became the professional at the North Worcestershire club.

At some point in 1926 he took charge of the municipal course at Harborne, still in Birmingham, and, in October of that year, although the council decided it needed a professional there, it appointed him as professional to the new municipal course at Cocks Moor for its opening on 24 November of that year.

At the end of that decade his sons began to shine at golf. W P Lewis was appointed assistant professional to Tom’s brother Leonard at Mannings Heath GC in Sussex. In 1932 he became professional at the West Park GC, a new course beside Brighton. H E Lewis, another son, was assistant professional at King’s Norton (another Lewis stronghold!) in 1929. He took over from his father when Tom retired in 1946 and successfully qualified for the News Chronicle £1500 event in 1946 from Cocksmoor Woods (as it was then called) in the same year.
