James McEwan
Edinburgh
James was apparently born in Stirling (and later records show this would be in 1747) and, originally a joiner, is said to have come to Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh as a clubmaker in 1770. Even the leaflet the McEwans published on the history of the company in 1894 gives this date so who am I to argue. Yes, he may have started his clubmaking as a single man (I am still to find a record of his marriage to Janet Young) but the first evidence of him being in Wrights Houses is the birth of their son, John, on 24 May 1777. Further children followed, William b 14 June 1779, the twins, Janet and Peter, b 20 September 1781 and Katherine/Catrin b 10 November 1786 who died as a baby in August of the following year.

He may have been the first clubmaker to stamp his name on the club, “J McEwan” below the mark of a thistle and a few of these still exist, including one in the R&A clubhouse.

James died in March 1800 and was buried in St Cuthbert’s cemetery on 31 March 1800.
