Stewart McEwan
Musselburgh/Harrisburg PA
Stewart McEwan Stewart McEwan was the youngest son of Peter McEwan and his wife, Ann née Hutchison, and born in Musselburgh on 5 April 1878.

He emigrated ro the United States, arriving there in May 1900. By 1903 he was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, filing for US citizenship and in charge of the course at Harrisburg Country Club. He married Mary Agatha Harro of Coxestown in December of that year. In May of that year he played, and won, and exhibition match at Harrisburg against the St Andrews émigré, Jock Hutchison. His share of the purse after a round and 3 extra holes was $30 which was not bad work for half an afternoon given the winner of the US Open that year would pocket $230. He and his wife made a trip home in the winter of 1906-7, returning to New York aboard the Carmania from Liverpool on 13 January.

At some point he moved across town to become professional at the public course in Reservoir Park. This was probably in 1909 as there are many reports of him and the course that year and, in 1910, it was noted that he had been engaged for another year, suggesting the previous one was his first. In 1910 also, he became a US citizen.

He made the first set of clubs for Pennsylvania Governor John Tener, a former professional baseball player, and taught him not to hold them like a baseball bat. He remained at Reservoir Park until his untimely death on 18 December 1917. He is buried in Heckton Cemetery, PA.
