Clubmakers J S Caird Newcastle/Hexham Pro at City of Newcastle Club from 1898-1919 and, thereafter, at Hexham until March 1930. He was responsible for designing the Northumberland GC course which opened in 1898 and made improvements to the long-gone Wooler course in 1910. In the mid 1890s he came up the Caird Framing Putter, a curious implement with a brass face 2 inches ahead of the shaft with a brass loop forming the neck and the loop being used to aim the ball and ensure it was struck by the middle of the face. Playing in a foursome’s match in 1915 with J D Edgar, he was described in the Newcastle press as ‘one of the most stylish and successful representatives of the Royal and Ancient game in the country’. Given Edgar (once a pupil of Caird) was then the reigning French Open champion, high praise indeed. Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
