George Ogilvie
Aberdeen
The Aberdeen Press and Journal announced the death of George Ogilvie of 161 King Street in the city ‘at the advanced age of 71 years’ (which says something about changes in life expectancy) on 25 November 1895.

He had been a wood turner at Duthie & Sons, Shipbuilders, but they identify him as becoming keeper of Aberdeen Golf Clubhouse in 1868. Robert Duthie, the head of the company, was captain of the Aberdeen club at the time and did much to progress the game, having heads made in the firm, hickory brought from Savannah (which he also sent to Bob Dow in Montrose, allowing him to replace ash and make his first hickory shafted club) and, in the foundry, creating the first golf ball mould north of the Tay.

The 1871 census shows Ogilvie living in a house at the links with wife, Margaret, six daughters and a son. Interestingly it also shows golf ball maker David Park, brother of Willie Park snr, boarding with the family.
