Clubmakers John McAndrew Cruden Bay / Glasgow Originally from St Andrews, and serving his clubmaking apprenticeship there with D&W Auchterlonie, John McAndrew was a well-travelled professional who was the pro at Cruden Bay from 1907-24 (the course with the view of the castle which inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula) except for his time in the army between 1915 and 1918. While at Cruden Bay he designed the courses at Inverurie and Huntly and redesigned much of Newburgh's course. In addition to his time in the North East, he had spells as professional at North Western and Cathkin Braes in Glasgow, Hayston and Doune. Clearly no slouch when it came to clubmaking, he won second prize for wooden putters, behind Willie Auchterlonie, at the 1909 International Golf Exhibition. In Glasgow he had clubmaking and retail premises in Mitchell Street, gave lessons, published a golf book (Golfing Step by Step) and broadcast a programme on BBC radio. During the same period he redesigned six greens at Machrie in Islay, all his designs being created as plasticine models which he displayed in his shop window.
