Harry Auchterlonie
Richmond/Annapolis
Henry Bruce Herd Auchterlonie was a son of a well-known clubmaker and stalwart of the St Andrews club, Joseph Auchterlonie, brother of David and Willie and Tom, and his wife Isabella Herd. Elder brother of David and Joseph jnr, he was born in St Andrews in 1890 and was a good amateur golfer with the New Club, competing in the 1909 Scottish amateur championship.

He began a professional career in the United States, sailing from Glasgow on the Cameronia and arriving in NYC on 2 March 1915, headed for the St Andrews’ boys at the Herd and Yeoman clubmaking business in Chicago. Despite this, his professional posts were in the east. He began as professional at the Arcola Country Club in Paramus, NJ, later that year.

Later, he became professional at the Country Club of Virginia at Richmond.

In May 1921 it was announced he was to be the inaugural professional at the Sherwood Forest Club in Annapolis, MD, which was being built under the direction of Herbert Strong. While this was happening he gave instruction at an indoor golf school then had a holiday back in Scotland. On his return he married Mary Patton and took up his new post. Then tragedy struck.

Returning from a dance, his wife and young nephew became entangled with an electric wire just outside their cottage. Harry succeeded in disentangling them then his foot caught an iron water pipe causing the whole current to go through his body, killing him instantly.
