Dan Mackie
Yonkers/Long Island
Daniel Sutherland Mackie was the youngest of the four golfing brothers from Elie, born in 1886 and spent his entire professional career in the United States. He arrived in New York on the Lucania in April 1907 on his way to brother Jack in Yonkers. His occupation was given as mason.

He must have been Jack’s assistant as Jack was professional at Dunwoodie until 1916 but the two of them played in several tournaments, such as the Van Cortlandt Park “Open to the World” competition with the Dunwoodie affiliation.

By 1914 he was playing in the Metropolitan championship from the Century Country Club. This was a long association with the club. I do not know if he left and returned, or had an agreement in place with the two clubs, but he became head professional at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck in its first season of 1923-4. He was back at Century and remained there until 1940. In 1938 he took on a promising and well-recommended assistant, Ben Hogan.

In 1940 he moved to the neighbouring Old Oaks Country Club and was professional there at least until 1956 when he was 70, sharing the duties with a younger American, Jim Duggan.
