Clubmakers W L Mackie Barnehurst/Long Island William Leishman Mackie was the eldest of four golfing brothers from Elie (with Isaac., Jack and Dan) though born in Glasgow in 1876 before the family moved to Fife. His first professional position was at Wanstead Park in 1898 and from where he entered for the Open Championship at Sandwich the following year. He moved to Barnehurst in Kent in 1903 and can be found on the 1911 census living in the club house with wife, Emma, and young son and daughter. He followed his brothers to the United States in 1915 but I am not sure where he spent his early years there. Georgiady has him at Winged Foot but that was his brother, Dan. He was, however, on Long Island as a draft card was issued to him there in 1917. In 1924 he was hired to lay out a nine-hole course on the Guggenheim estate at Sands Point and remained there as a private instructor until his death at Nassau Hospital after several months illness and an unsuccessful operation in June 1941.
