Clubmakers A O Tunley Newtown/Bishops Stortford Albert Owen Tunley was born in Rhayader in 1895 and was listed as a golf caddy in the 1911 census, presumably at the nearby Llandrindod Wells club. He served in the First World War and a newspaper article notes one of the Tunley brothers suffered a head wound. This is almost certainly Albert as a Sgt A Tunley in the South Wales Borderers (52nd Grad Battalion) is shown as being admitted to hospital on 29 October 1917. After the war he returned to golf as a career as professional at the St Giles Club in Newtown from where he qualified for the £1000 ‘Daily Mail’ tournament at St Andrews in 1922. He had moved to Bishop’s Stortford by 1924 in which year he played in the qualifiers for the Open at Hoylake. His brother Alfred was also a golf professional in Solihull. Another brother, James, was also employed at golf courses, at Llandrindod Wells by George Humble and perhaps at Solihull by Alfred. Whether this was as an assistant or a greenkeeper is not clear but he is included in the list of assistants killed in the war Search the catalogue for clubs by this maker | |
