Brass ladies' putter
Maker:
D McEwan and Son
, Edinburgh/Musselburgh Date: 1895
A ladies’ brass putter from around 1895 with plenty ‘dings’ but good clear markings on the reverse of the head 'D McEwan Musselburgh' in an oval and the stylised serpent mark signifying it was a woman’s club. Pete Georgiady describes it as the ‘Stewart serpent mark’ and, certainly, Tom Stewart is most commonly associated with it. Whether he had anything to do with forging the head of this club, or it is a s result of misogyny in Musselburgh, I don’t know,
The sheepskin grip on a straight hickory shaft, with some woollen listing visible in the gaps, is almost certainly original. A very eye-catching display club and an ideal gift for the lady golfer you would like to wind up just a little bit.
